WHY EduLight is the best

The best home tutors can recognize the unique obstacles that each of their students faces, and they understand how best to help their students clear those obstacles.

It is much harder to teach a subject when you don’t have a firm grasp on it.
Every student is different and should be treated according to his or her own needs and goals.

It requires patience, flexibility, and determination to be a great home tutor.
Student’s good academic performance rest largely upon his or her grades. Raising those grades and scores, therefore, should be a priority.

Home Lessons or coaching  can be a rewarding experience. Being a consistently effective home tutor, however, does pose some challenges.

Here are the steps that every effective home tutor should take when beginning with a new student.

1)  Determine your student’s potential

As a home tuition tutor, it is your job not to do the work for your student, but rather to show him how to do the work for himself.  In order to determine how best to help your student, you first have to know who he is, what his interests are, and how he feels about the subject or subjects in which you’re tutoring him.

Someone with an inclination towards math and the sciences might be relatively weak in the arts or the humanities and vice versa.  Since these two general categories involve different ways of thinking about concepts, you should understand which sort of thinker your student is.  There are a few students who are equally good at both modes of thought, but they are rare.

Start off your first home tuition lesson with a practice test in the subject or subjects your student is taking.  This will give you a good general idea of his level of skill.

You should also speak directly with your student.  Ask him what his favorite and least favorite subjects are, how his grades are, and how he feels about the subject that he needs work in.
Sometimes, the source of a student’s problems is a simple lack of effort, in which case the solution is straightforward.

If he is making a serious effort at the subject and failing despite that, you will have to delve deeper than mere practice – you’ll have to show your student how to more effectively think about the subject in question.

Be careful not to judge your student based on external qualities such as his appearance or demeanor.  While we’d all like to think we don’t judge people based on their looks or dress, these sorts of prejudice are a reality of everyday life.

Don’t judge your student’s abilities by the way he talks or by his behavior.  Rather, judge him by the skill he demonstrates through testing and regular practice.

2)  Tailor the home tuition program to meet your student’s needs

Once you’ve determined your student’s strengths and weaknesses, you can fit the lessons to his or her needs.  Every student is different, which is why versatility and adaptability are such important qualities for a tutor to have.

If your pupil is strong in reading and writing and weak in math, you will have to teach him how to think about his work in a way that he is probably unused to.  Similarly, a student who’s great at math but not at writing may have no idea how to begin writing an essay.

This is why the first step in the home tuition process is so important.  Once you understand your student’s weaknesses, you can determine what sort of exercises will help him the most.

As a home tutor, you should ideally have easy access to various kinds of academic materials.  If you are teaching math, provide your student with problem sets, both to work on in class and as homework.

Teaching writing and reading is simultaneously easier and harder in this regard – you may have to use your judgment when choosing materials for your student to study.

3)  Eliminate your student’s weaknesses

It’s often said that grades and test scores aren’t the most important parts of academic life.  This saying is true in the sense that receiving a good grade or score doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve learned anything.

Nevertheless, your student’s good academic performance rest largely upon his or her grades. Therefore, in home tuition, raising those grades and scores should be your first priority.

Keep a chart of your tutee’s practice test and homework scores.
If the numbers don’t begin to rise over the course of a few weeks, you will need to consider whether you’re taking the right approach with your student during the home tuition session.

4)  Know the subject before you decide to teach it

Home tutorials is not an easy job, even when you have total mastery of the subject you’re teaching.  A great writer might find it difficult to teach writing, while a genius mathematician may have a hard time getting a student to understand relatively simple mathematical concepts.

It is that much harder to teach a subject, however, when you don’t have a firm grasp on it.  This is most often the case with language tutoring.

Some believe that the only requirement for being an English home tutor is that you know how to speak English.  As any English home tutor can tell you, this is absolutely not the case.  Languages are extremely deep and complicated subjects, and unless you have an excellent handle on the many rules and exceptions of English, you will have a hard time teaching it.  And if you have a hard time teaching a subject, the student will be able to tell.  Stick to what you know.

5)  Understand your student’s thought processes

The most difficult part of being a home tutor is building a relationship of trust and respect between your student and yourself.  This isn’t as easy as knowing your subject and having a degree from a well-respected university.

The only way to really connect with your student is to get to know, over the course of a few home tuition lessons, his unique way of thinking: how he takes on challenges, what he thinks of his subjects and of school in general, and how he hopes to achieve his goals.  If you can get to know your student, you will understand how best to help him.

In home tuition, it requires patience, flexibility, and determination to be a great tutor.  If you believe you have those qualities and you have the desire to teach, justfollow these guidelines
